Derek Turns Eight

For about a month leading up to Derek's birthday, I was giving him different ideas for what his birthday party could be. I was really hoping he'd pick one of them, or even come up with something new on his own. Not a chance! Once again, as always, he wanted Chuck E. Cheese. Well, it is his birthday, so who was I to say No?

Derek invited five friends from school. One RSVP'ed and said he was coming. He did. The others didn't RSVP and they didn't show up either. To me, it's fine if kids can't make it, but it would be nice if the parents had some courtesy and let us know. Whatever. The friend that came is in Derek's class, and his father is the head coach of our baseball team. His father came, as well as his older sister. Having just a few kids did make things a lot more manageable.

Derek wanted a baseball theme for his cake. Grandma made a field with players on it. Derek loved it!

They have changed the layout of Sir Chuck's since last year. They opened it up more, which means that the play area and the dining area are no longer separate. This made for a noisier lunch. The good news is that since Derek is older now, he doesn't need constant supervision while in the play area. We would give the kids some tokens, and they would go off and play and come back every once in a while to check in. OK, it was really to get more tokens, but it worked for me! And as always, Derek and I played our usual game of Arctic Thunder. We actually played two, each winning one.

I don't have a ton of pictures since I didn't need to follow Derek around. I have a few. Besides, until he chooses something different for his party, they will all look the same anyway!
