USATT Umpire/Referee Memo 2006-1

May 19, 2006

SUBJECT: Certified Referees

1. Effective January 2007, all USATT referees must be qualified as Certified, National or International Referees.
2. All USATT umpires are eligible to take the certified referee training and exam.
3. Those umpires who have served as referees, based on their umpire rank, are encouraged to become certified referees.
4. We are not interested in a large number of umpires taking the referee exam to get a new qualification. The pass rate for the exam is about 75%. Those who fail are normally umpires with no experience in running tournaments.
5. The certified referee fee is $15. In January 2007, the fee will increase to $25.
6. The exam fee includes the references (USATT Tournament Guide and the Referee CD) and the exam.
7. The exam must be taken within 3 months of paying the fee.
8. Live Referee Seminars.
a. We will conduct live seminars at the 2006 US Open, July 4, 1-5 p.m. in Charlotte, NC; the 2006 Nationals in December in Las Vegas and the Show Me State Games in Jefferson City, MO, July 22, 2006.
b. The seminar fee is $15 at the US Open and Nationals and $25 at the Show Me Games. All fees include the cost of the exam. The additional fee at the Show Me Games goes to the instructor.
c. The live seminars will not include the exam. It may be taken within 3 months without paying additional fees.
d. We have funds for additional live seminars if sufficient candidates are available to make it cost effective. The minimum is 5 candidates, preferably 7-9. The best time for a seminar is a Sunday following a Saturday tournament.
e. Anyone interested in scheduling a live seminar conduct Wendell Dillon by E-mail pong35@mindspring.com.
